Common questions

Do I need GST registration for my business?

It depends on turnover, what you sell and where your customers are. Registration becomes compulsory once you cross the prescribed turnover threshold, and the threshold differs for goods and services. Some situations require registration regardless of turnover — inter-state supply and most e-commerce selling, for example.

Voluntary registration below the threshold can also make sense if your customers are businesses claiming input credit. Worth a short conversation rather than a guess.

How often do GST returns have to be filed?

Monthly or quarterly, depending on the scheme you are registered under and your turnover, plus an annual return. Late filing attracts interest and a per-day late fee, and a missed return blocks the next one — which is how small slips turn into large ones. We track the calendar so that does not happen.

What records should a small business keep?

Sales and purchase invoices, bank statements, expense receipts, and records of any TDS deducted or paid. Keeping them month by month rather than assembling them at year end is the single thing that makes filing straightforward and keeps your numbers useful to you during the year.
